Ultrasonic Nebulizer FAQ's

Return to the Ultrasonic Nebulizer product page

Q: How does it work?

A: It utilizes ultrasonic technology to produce quick and effective nebulization. Nubulization is the process by which your liquid medicine is converted into a fine vapor or mist, allowing the medicine to reach deeply into the respiratory tract when inhaled.

Q: How is this different that my compressor nebulizer?

A: Compressor nebulizers generally use a piston-type compressor to force air into a hand held nebulizer. This air pressure “sprays” the medication into a mist. They are typically larger, heavier, and noisier and must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Also, the air pressure can vary, which can make the particle size of the medication uncertain.

Q: Why is particle size important?

A: Ultrasonic nebulizers allow for smaller particles of medication “mist” which can enter the lungs faster and deeper for more effective treatment.

Q: What disorders are nebulizers recommended for?

A: Typically, asthma, bronchitis or other respiratory diseases; allergies or hay fever, and sinusitis or nasal congestion due to colds or allergies can be treated with a nebulizer.

Q: What medications can I use with the Kidz-Med Ultrasonic Nebulizer?

A: Not all medications are compatible with ultrasonic therapy, including a classification known as suspension drugs, and or drugs with high concentrations of lipids or oils. Some drugs may be slightly diluted with water or saline to be used with ultrasonic nebulization. As always, we recommend that you check with your physician or health care provider for recommendations for drug, dosage, frequency, and duration of any nebulizer therapy.

Q: What is the capacity of the medication chamber?

A: The maximum recommended capacity of the nebulization chamber is 5mL, which should never be exceeded using either medication alone or medication with saline or water. A graduated measuring cup comes with the kit.

Q: Is it completely portable?

A: Once charged, the nebulizer can be completely detached from any power supply, and becomes totally portable. The unit can be used this way, or with the included AC adaptor. When the nebulizer is not in use, the battery should be disconnected from the device (if left connected, the battery will lose power at a rate of 10 percent every 4 days)

Q: How big is the Ultrasonic Nebulizer?

A: The unit is only 4 inches tall (without the mask attached) and weighs less than a pound. It is easily held in one hand.

Q: How long does a nebulization treatment take?

A: There are two flow control option settings. When set on high, treatment is about 13 minutes, and can last up to 26 minutes on the low setting.

Q: Is the nebulizer FDA registered?

A: Yes, and if prescribed by a physician, is generally reimbursable by many insurances.

Q: How long does the battery charge last?

A: A fully charged battery will last 6 hours or more before it needs recharging. As the batteries age, this time may decrease. It is advised to recharge the battery after it has been fully discharged. Charging should take 3-4 hours, and you should never recharge for more than 8 hours as this can shorten the battery life.

Q: What happens if I forget to turn off the unit after use?

A: The nebulizer is equipped with a protection circuit. When the medication has been depleted, the operation of the device will automatically stop.

Q: How do I clean the nebulizer?

A: Before cleaning disconnect the adapter from the power source and separate the battery box from main unit. Clean the main unit, nebulization chamber, mask and upper cover using clean water as shown in illustrations above. Never wash the nebulizer under running water. Wipe dry with a soft cloth.

The air filter may be rinsed under running water, or replaced as needed.

If the accessories are dirty, wipe them with a cloth saturated with hand-soap and rinse with a clean cloth and warm water. Do not use detergent.

For proper sanitation, the nebulizer must be cleaned and thoroughly dried after each use.

Q: How old does a patient need to be to use the ultrasonic nebulizer?

A: In addition to the mouthpiece attachment and nasal fork attachment, the Kidz-Med Ultrasonic Nebulizer comes with a child-sized mask that can be used with infants or toddlers, and an adult mask. As with any medical device, therapy should only be administered under the supervision of an adult.
