Frequently Asked Questions
Please review the following Frequently Asked Questions to improve your experience with the Kidz-Med VeraTemp® Non-Contact Thermometer. If you have a question that is not included, please feel free to contact us here.
How does it work?
The VeraTemp® uses a totally safe infrared technology to measure the heat radiating off of the patient's forehead.
Why take the temperature on the forehead?
The human forehead is a very vascular and therefore ideal place for measuring temperature. The vasculature in this area is linked to the heart by the carotid artery, which is directly linked to the aorta. It forms part of the main trunk of the arterial system. So long as the patient's blood flow is permanent and regular, the method allows precise measurement of the temperature. Forehead thermometers can obtain temperature data by rubbing the probe over or being in contact with skin, or they can be totally non-contact.
Is the VeraTemp® as accurate as oral, rectal or axillary thermometers?
Yes. All of these approved thermometers have acceptable tolerances. The VeraTemp® meets or exceeds the very high standard of +/- 0.2°C accuracy.
I'm getting a reading that seems really low. Why is that?
The most common mistake is that the thermometer is in the wrong mode. When a temperature is consistently much lower than normal, it is probably because the thermometer is in the "Surface" mode instead of "Body" mode or it is being aimed improperly.
How do I aim properly and what is the correct distance from the forehead?
Your aim should be at the forehead approximately 2-3 inches or three fingers away.
What other environmental factors cause a false reading?
- Not aiming at the forehead.
- Veratemp® is not a proper distance away from forehead.
- Measuring temperatures after a patient just came in from the cold or had a cold compress on their head.
- Hair/bangs in the way.
- Sweat on the forehead.
- Breezy conditions.
Why doesn't the VeraTemp® work if I aim it at my wrist or other part of my body?
The VeraTemp® uses a sophisticated, FDA approved algorithm to calculate the body temperature based on the forehead reading and ambient temperature. This algorithm has not been designed and therefore cannot be relied upon to produce an accurate measurement from any other part of the body.
What else can the VeraTemp® do?
The non-contact technology of the VeraTemp® allows you to measure the temperature of bath water, food, baby bottles and room temperature.
Can I drop the VeraTemp®?
Try not to. After all, the VeraTemp® is a sophisticated medical device approved by the FDA. The VeraTemp® has met strict requirements which do test for resiliency from drops, however.
Why does my temperature reading seem to be way off?
Make sure you have the VeraTemp® set to your desired Celsius/Fahrenheit preference. If that is correctly set, verify that it is set to the proper mode. If you are taking body temperature, make sure the mode is set to "Body" not "Surface" or "Room".
